Web Portal for USC Electronic Resources
A CSCI 577a (Software Engineering) Project - Team 13

The Project

Description:

The USC Libraries' information about USC's electronic resources, databases and journals has moved from an in-house system, the Electronic Resources Database, to a hosted solution. The interface that they currently provide leaves much to be desired. The aim of the project is to integrate all these services through one single portal.

The proposed system is expected to be advantageous as the existing system is very generic and its difficult for the users to extract desired information. The proposed system would be user friendly and this would increase the overall productivity of the user, by helping him/her to quickly get relevant resources and information.

Problem Statement:

The proposed system would integrate services from vendors "WebFeat", "Serials Solutions", and USC library's "Electronic Resources Database". The vendors provide services via Web services API and a ready-to-use JavaScript that will enable us to do create the new interface.

Listings of journals and databases, are desired. The option of switching to subject specific pages, to show databases and journals related to a particular subject, is desired.

Display of customized RSS/XML news feeds from popular information portals and websites is desired. Quick links to the popular information sources and websites are desired.
